Can trees be planted in clay or poorly drained soil?

Clay soil is not automatically unsuitable, although prolonged waterlogging can damage trees that are not adapted to it. Compacted ground may also restrict root development. The planting plan should establish whether preparation, a different position or a species tolerant of wetter conditions is appropriate. Adding material to a planting hole alone does not resolve every underlying drainage or soil problem.
